Side Trip from Ghunsa
The Ghunsa is a small and beautiful village on the way to the Kanchenjunga base camp trek. The Ghunsa village lies at 3,415m altitude in the Kanchenjunga region Taplejung district. It is the last permanent settlement in this valley. There are small and beautiful wooden decorated houses in this village. Ghunsa is a nice place to stay, you can enjoy good accommodations and delicious food in this village. There are some beautiful places for your day hikes and side trip from Ghunsa.
Ghunsa View Point
Meanwhile, the Ghunsa viewpoint is the best short hiking
destination from Ghunsa village and it is good for your acclimatization to your
Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek. After breakfast, you can start your
hike. First, you need to cross Ghunsa Khola after that you have to climb all
the way to Ghunsa View Point. It is a nice walk through a beautiful forest
and a great chance to see some wildlife like Deer, Antelope, and Himalayan
pheasant. You will enjoy your hike to great views of Ghunsa and Folley village
and several mountain peaks.
Dudh pokhari (Milky Lake)
The Dudh Pokhari (Milky Lake) is a little bit hard and adventure day hiking destination from Ghunsa village. You need to start your hike early in the morning after breakfast and you need to take a lunch pack too. You have to follow the way to Sele la (way to Kanchenjunga SouthBase Camp) for almost 15 minutes then you have to continue your way walking to the left side of the Ghunsa hydropower pipeline. The trail is small and Jig-jag so at a certain place you can miss the trail. The walking is nice and beautiful through the jungle. You can meet some Yak’s farmhouse on the way to Dudh pokhari. The people at the farmhouse provide us with Yak’s milk and cheese (Churpi). The Dudh Pokhari is a very beautiful place, there are two beautiful milky lakes. The second lake is a little bit far from the first lake and the second one is bigger than the first. You will be able to enjoy your day hike to see the beautiful mountain views and Wildlife. The dudh pokhari is the best side trip from Ghunasa. But just a few trekkers know about it and the trail here.
Side Trip from Khambachen
The Khambachen is a small and beautiful place on the
way to Kanchenjunga's north base camp. It lies at 4,146m from sea level.
There is some nice tea house waiting for your visit, and they warmly welcome
you. If you have time, we highly recommend this place to stay one extra night
to stay for your acclimatization day. You can make your holiday more enjoyable
and adventurous with your day hikes. There is some beautiful place for your
day hikes and side trip from Khambachen.
Janu Viewpoint (Kumbhakarna Base Camp)

The Janu viewpoint about 4,600m is a beautiful destination for your side trip from Khambachen. It is the best place to enjoy the great views of Janu Himal (Kumbhakrna) 7710m, Janu glacier, and several mountains peak. After breakfast at Khambachen, you can start your day's hikes. At first, you need to cross the Ghunsa Khola then you can continue your walking through the beautiful valley to reach Janu's viewpoint. The valley view, wildlife, and beautiful mountain view make your side trip more pleasant. You can enjoy the aerial views of this side trip.
The Janu viewpoint is popular with a different
name too. It is called Phaktalung (the holy place for the Limbu people) there is a huge
stone. Where every people have dreams of reaching there to pray and worship. There
is a small temple and one shelter made by the government. Thousands of pilgrims visit the lakes during the full moon
festival in August. It is the best and most beautiful place for a side trip from
Khambachen.
Nupchu Pokhari (Lake) 4,952m (16,243 feet)
The Nupchu Pokhari 4,952m is another beautiful destination for your side trip from Khambachen. You have to follow the yak trail through Nuchu Khola (River) valley and continue. This trip also needs to start after breakfast. Your side trip will be perfect with breathtaking mountain views. When you turn your background, the view of Janu Himal, Ghabur, Pholesobi, and many other snowcapped mountain peaks makes your hikes pleasant. You can enjoy the great views of several mountains peak. Like Nupchu Peak, Nagphu, and Sarphu ranges, Lakes, glaciers, and wildlife. You can enjoy your journey to meet many Himalayan yaks on the way. When you feel your journey (hikes) for today is enough then you can continue the descent to Khambachen.
